Cobra De Capelo.......

Hi
I am back for few of you with some more information on snakes.
The topic of my blog is a very interesting creature among the species of snakes. It is called as COBRA,please do not confuse it with King Cobra.
This snake is highly venomous. The name is derived from Portuguese Cobra De Capelo meaning "snake with hood" or simply stating "hood snake".
They belong to the family of Elapidae.
Elapidae in Greek(éllops) means sea-fish.It is a family of venomous snakes found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, terrestrially in Asia and North America and aquatically in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Elapid snakes exist in a wide range of sizes, from 18 cm species of Drysdalia to the 6 m King Cobra, and are characterized by hollow, fixed fangs through which they inject venom. Currently, 61 genera that include 325 species are recognized. So one of the member in Cobra Kingdom is Naja Naja found mostly in Asia(including India) and Africa,Middle-East.Though there are many more genera under cobra but this one is more related and most widespread. It is a genus of venomous elapid snakes. The NAJA has 22 species under it.

This snake is revered in Indian mythology and culture and is often seen with snake charmers. It is now protected in India under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act (1972).
An average cobra is about 1.9 meters (6 feet) in length and rarely as long as 2.4 meters (nearly 8 feet).
Cobras normally feed on rodents, toads, frogs, birds and snakes. Their normal habitat includes open forest and farmland. They are however also able to thrive in cities, living on rodents in the sewers and underground drains.

Indian cobras are oviparous and lay their eggs between the months of April and July. Females lay from 12 to 30 eggs in an underground nest and the eggs hatch 48 to 69 days later. Newborn cobras measure between 8 and 12 inches (20–30 cm). Newly hatched cobras have fully functional venom glands. There are numerous myths about cobras in India, including the idea that they mate with ratsnakes.

Venom :

All species in Naja are jehreeley...and if once bitten my them may result in death. Most species have strongly neurotoxic venom, which attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis, but many also have hemotoxic features which causes swelling, necrosis and has a significant anticoagulant effect.

Several Naja species, referred to as spitting cobras, have developed a specialized venom delivery mechanism, in which their front fangs, instead of releasing venom through the tips, as a hypodermic needle, have a rifled opening in the front surface, which allows the snake to propel the venom out of the mouth. While typically referred to as spitting, the action is more like squirting. The range and accuracy with which they can shoot their venom varies from species to species, but it is used primarily as a defense mechanism. Once sprayed onto a victim's skin, the venom acts as a severe irritant. If it is introduced to the eye, it can cause a severe burning sensation and temporary or even permanent blindness if not cleaned out immediately and thoroughly.

Daboia .......hisssssssssssssssssssss

Hoye!!!!! I am back with some knowledge!!!!!
Read if u love them,,,read even if u don't.......

Common Name : Russell's Viper,Chain Viper,Seven Pacer
Biological name : Daboia russelii

Hindi name: That lies Hid..or The lurker.....

This saanp is named after its discoverer Dr. Patrick Russell.
It is the most dangerous and the one causing maximum deaths in India and world wide.India boasts of 4 species of saanps and this is one is among those four....

Vital Stats : ( not to be confused with 36-24-36 ,,,the below mentioned are more dangerous and more voluptuous than mentioned above).

Average Length : 4 ft
Maximum Length : 5.5 ft
Total length 4 ft., 1 inch 124 cm
Length of tail 7 inches 18 cm
Girth 6 inches 15 cm
Width of head 2 inches 5 cm
Length of head 2 inches 5 cm

Geographical Locations : India,Pakistan,Sri lanka,Myanmar,Bangladesh,Nepal,Taiwan,Indonesia,Sumatra.

Habitat:

It is not restricted to any particular habitat, but does tend to avoid dense forests. The snake is mostly found in open, grassy or bushy areas, but may also be found in second growth forests (scrub jungles), on forested plantations and farmland. They are most common in plains, coastal lowlands and hills of suitable habitat. Generally not found at altitude, but has been reported as far up as 2300–3000 m. Humid environments, such as marshes, swamps and rain forests, are avoided.

This species is often found in highly urbanized areas and settlements in the countryside, the attraction being the rodents commensurable with man. As a result, those working outside in these areas are most at risk of being bitten.

Behavior :
Terrestrial,Nocturnal
When threatened they form a series of S-loops, raise the first third of the body and produce a hiss that is supposedly louder than that of any other snake. When striking from this position, they can exert so much force that even a large individual can lift most of its body off the ground in the process. These are difficult snakes to handle: they are strong and agile and react violently to being picked up.The bite may be a snap, or, they may hang on for many seconds.

Mating:
Oviparous,Yearly,gestation period of 6 months.

Venom :
The most interesting trait in it
The amount of venom produced by individual specimens is considerable. Reported venom yields for adult specimens range from 130–250 mg to 150–250 mg to 21–268 mg. For 13 juveniles with an average length of 79 cm, the average venom yield was 8–79 mg (mean 45 mg).
Severe pain may last for 2–4 weeks. Locally, it may persist depending on the level of tissue damage. Often, local swelling peaks within 48–72 hours, involving both the affected limb and the trunk. If swelling up to the trunk occurs within 1–2 hours, massive envenomation is likely. Discoloration may occur throughout the swollen area as red blood cells and plasma leak into muscle tissue. Death from septicaemia, respiratory or cardiac failure may occur 1 to 14 days post-bite or even later.

This has always fascinated me.I was lucky to rescue and see a cobra but just eying for a chance to grab this one,i hope i make it soon : ) .......

I hope few of u will find this blog interesting.....

Shall c u soon ....
Till den
